Lakeside to Lyon

Not only is Lake Annecy considered the cleanest lake in Europe, but it's surrounded by 33 kilometres of bike paths that promote cycling as a sustainable way of experiencing the lake. This makes riding a bike around the lake even more enjoyable because not only do you get an amazing view, but you don't have to worry about traffic. Take the challenge of cycling the whole way around the lake, which can take around three hours, or just do part of the route.
You can rent a bike for half a day at Location Vélo Annecy and there is a carpark nearby at Parking Saint-Claire.

All that bike riding has probably worked up an appetite so head to Café Bichette for lunch. The cafe's director Ghislain Gresse has a passion for food that has previously won him the title of French barbecue champion. Try one of his burgers or make your own poke bowl.

Another remarkable natural formation of the French alps is Les Gorges du Fier. The Fier river has slowly carved a narrow gorge over time, which you can explore via a footbridge that is built into the rock face and suspended over the flowing river.

Make a pit stop at the Fourvière Hôtel to check into your room. This building is a former convent and though it has been transformed into a hotel, most of the beautiful architecture from its convent days has been preserved.

Your hotel is conveniently located near the Lugdunum Roman Theatres, so take a short walk over to the ancient site and see where actors, poets, musicians, intellectuals and other artists would have entertained crowds of thousands of people.

Lyon is considered to be the gourmet capital of France and one of the most quintessential Lyonnaise dining experiences is to eat at a 'bouchon'. A bouchon is typically a family-run bisto, characterised by a rustic and hearty style of cuisine, and a friendly and lively atmosphere. Le Bouchon des Cordeliers has more of a modern style décor compared to other bouchons, but its menu certainly follows tradition. For a truly local speciality, I recommend the Quenelle Lyonnaise which is a kind of dough dumpling made with fish.
