    • Be amazed by the Byzantine art of mosaics.
    • Discover the palaces and cathedral of Ferrara.
    • Discover the creativity of filmmaker Fellini.
    • Take lots of pictures of the murals of Dozza.
    • Sample as much Italian food as you can.
This 3-day route from Bologna proposes an approach to the art and monuments of three interesting cities of Emilia Romagna: Ferrara, Ravenna and Rimini.
Ferrara, with its Renaissance art; Ravenna with its Byzantine mosaics and Rimini with its Roman monuments and the traces of Federico Fellini (Italian filmmaker). Ready for a journey through history?
On the way back to Bologna it is proposed to make a detour to Dozza to discover its urban art. And, of course, it is proposed to taste Italian food during the three days of the route, to get to know some of its specialities.
This route can be done at any time of the year. Just keep in mind that it gets dark earlier in the winter months, so you may have to visit less places.

    Ferrara and Renaissance Art

On this first day of the route we propose a tour of the city of Ferrara, a city of outstanding Renaissance buildings and artistic works. The historic city centre of Ferrara was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 and a short walk will take you to see some of the most important buildings that contributed to this designation. You will visit the Este Castle, the family that contributed most to the growth of the city, the Cathedral, Palazzo Schifanoia and Palazzo dei Diamanti. You can also enjoy some great Italian food!

    Ravenna and Byzantine Art

On the second day of your trip you will visit Ravenna, the city of mosaics. In this city there are 8 monuments that were declared world heritage by unesco in 1996 for their Byzantine art. The monuments are usually sober and strong on the outside, but inside they contain the best works of Byzantine mosaic art, which show the relationship between religion and politics during the splendour of the Byzantine Empire. Although you won't visit them all, you will be amazed by the ones you see. It is recommended to visit the main monuments with a book guide to better understand what they represent and in what context they were built.

Rimini: Roman Monuments and Federico Fellini's Traces

Many people come to Rimini in summer to enjoy its long beach, but in this itinerary the focus is on its Roman and artistic past. Of course, if you're travelling in summer and prefer a few hours on the beach, it's within easy reach. During the day you will visit some of the most representative monuments and sites of Rimini and you will get to know Fellini's neighbourhood and his museum. On the way back to Bologna we suggest a stop in the small medieval town of Dozza, to walk through its streets and discover the urban art.
