An Afternoon Drive from Phoenix through Sedona

It's day one of your road trip through the Southwest. The journey begins in Phoenix, continues through Sedona and wraps up the day in Flagstaff. You'll have plenty of time, but since this is an afternoon journey, watch the clock carefully to maximize daylight while driving by beautiful desert landscapes.

    Phoenix

Time to hit the road. The first leg of your trip is a relatively quiet one, driving from Phoenix through Northern Arizona on Interstate 17. Don't worry. Spectacular sights await once you've arrived in Sedona.

Take a quick detour to the Montezuma Castle National Monument. The cliffside dwelling was home to indigenous tribes more than 700 years ago. It's an imposing sight. Think of it as an ancient high-rise apartment carved into limestone.
It's easy to pull over and soak in the scenery in 30 minutes or less. It's best not to linger too long since you'll want to drive through the city of Sedona while there's still ample daylight. If leaving Phoenix takes longer than expected, feel free to skip this stop.
    There is an entrance fee.

You'll turn north on 179 and enter Sedona for a scenic drive full of bright pink sandstone formations. It's almost like traveling through a city inside its own national park. You're welcome to pull over at any of the designated scenic overlooks, but Courthouse Vista is an especially convenient option. The colorful desert landscape is a dramatic backdrop for photos. You can also stretch your legs and if needed, use the public bathrooms.

If you haven't done so yet, pull over and fill up the tank. This 76 station is your last chance for gas and a bathroom break before heading north between Sedona and Flagstaff, where rest stops are few and far between. The drive through Oak Creek Canyon is beautiful in its own right, but views will be limited as night falls. Prepare for shifts in elevation, a few tight turns and the possibility of traffic alternating single lanes if road work is taking place.

Atria opened in late 2021, quickly establishing itself as one of the best new restaurants in Downtown Flagstaff. Chef Rochelle Daniel prepares seasonal menus based on fresh ingredients currently available in Northern Arizona. The seafood options are excellent. Regulars love the salmon, but there's usually a daily fish special that's whole-roasted for two people to share. The wine list has a nice European selection.
The restaurant is a short walk from the hotel, but make sure to book a reservation well in advance. Call 928-440-4377 with any questions.
