A Day of Reflection

Struthof is the site of the only former World War II concentration camp in France. Now, in addition to the historical site there is a museum and memorial dedicated to the thousands of people who suffered here. It's a sombre, yet moving atmosphere and the guided tour provides a compelling experience.

On the outskirts of Strasbourg there is a park that spans across the French and German border. Connecting the two sides of the park is a pedestrian and cyclist bridge which is suspended over the Rhine River, symbolising cooperation between the two countries that have historically been in conflict. Take a walk along both sides of the river and sit on the centre platform of the bridge to watch the Rhine flow past.

Head back into the city centre and leave your car at Parking Gutenberg as much of this area is pedestrian only.

Have lunch at Jeannette et les Cycleux, a quirky café and bar that serves tasty salads, soups and grazing platters. If you have a sweet tooth, you'll also love their milkshakes topped with whipped cream.

There are plenty of interesting sights at the Cathédrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg, even for the non-religious. The facade is covered in ornamental carvings and statues, while the interior features an elaborate organ, colourful stained-glass windows and a curious astronomical clock. But, my favourite part is the rooftop platform which has remarkable views of the city.

Canals flow throughout Strasbourg, linking together all the major parts of the city. This makes a bout tour one of the best ways to experience the city and its history. Batorama run a boat tour called 'Strasbourg, 20 centuries of history' which takes you through the medieval city centre, the imperial district and the European quarter which is home to the European Parliament.

As you walk through Petite France, you could easily believe that you've been transported into a fairytale as the colourful half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and abundant flower beds seem too enchanting to be true. When you've taken enough photos, head inside one of the several gift shops to buy some traditional gingerbread as a souvenir.

In my opinion, La Corde à Linge is located in the prime position in Petite France. Their outdoor seating has the perfect view opposite the old leather tanners' house and canal. Even better than the view is the menu which has a large variety of spätzle dishes (traditional Alsatian pasta).
