Today you'll spend your time visiting another historic Mississippi River town, Cape Girardeau. In addition to a few museums and heritage houses, you'll be making your way to the countryside as well.
The Trail of Tears State Park is just a short drive away and you'll have plenty of time to learn about the tragic history that took place here and take a short hike before continuing on to Ironton for the night.

Between 1830 and 1840, the United Stated government sent General Scott and his troops to bound over 15,000 Native Americans into stockades and hold them at bayonet (gun) point.
General Scott and his troops then looted their homes and forced the Native American Choctaw, Creek and Cherokee to march more than 1,200 miles to their new home known as "Indian Territory" in Oklahoma.
Facing hunger, disease and exhaustion on the forced removal, more than 4,000 of the 15,000 perished in the march.
Today you can visit where the Native Americans passed through and learn more about this tragic piece of American history.
