You’ll get everything done (and eaten) in a day, and you’ll see plenty of the north east while you’re doing so too.
Visit Gateshead for morning views over the Tyne before driving to the coast for one of the freshest lunches money can buy.
Then you’ll end the day in trendy Jesmond, enjoying a peaceful sunset walk before tucking in to one of the most innovative menus in the region.

It’s walk-in only at this popular hotspot, which lies at the heart of a community development designed by Wayne Hemingway and his wife Geraldine. The café hosts cultural activities throughout the year.
Try here the chia seed-sprinkled smashed avocado and poached eggs while enjoying the view from the outdoor terrace.

The best way to explore Tynemouth is on foot, and the trip to the town’s lighthouse and pier is just under two miles.
You’ll walk along the pristine golden Long Sands Beach, through King Edward’s Bay, past Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and along the 900-metre pier that rewards those who trek out there with some of the best photo opportunities in the north east.
When you feel your stomach rumbling again, turn around for a 25-minute stroll back to King Edward’s Bay. There you’ll find a true north-eastern treasure at the base of the cove, perched on the shore.

    Riley's Fish Shack

    Restaurant
    Open Details
Riley’s Fish Shack began life as a street food stall at the annual Tyneside food festival in May 2012. By 2016, its semi-permanent steel shipping container was being described by the Observer’s renowned food critic Jay Rayner as the eating experience of the year.
It serves seafood freshly caught that morning, from the sea that laps at its entrance. The restaurant is open all year round but with limited covered seating, you don’t need me to tell you that you'll need to wrap up if planning to visit outside of summertime. It is the north-east after all.
The menu varies depending on the day’s catch but if you see the monkfish kebab, don’t delay! It’s walk-ins only but summer deckchair bookings can be made via their website.

Keep an eye out for Kingfishers, red squirrels, and even otters in this thriving wildlife haven. Best of all, it’s free to enter.
