One Day Around Copenhagen to Discover Danish Architecture and History

If you liked Copenhagen, you will love what you see on this day trip.
This is a day tour that will remain etched in your memories as it happened to me: after a few years I still feel the thrill of discovering some of the pearls of Denmark making me want to explore this magnificent country far and wide.
You will admire a church with clean and perfectly symmetrical shapes.
Then you'll visit a fairytale castle and a tragedy castle where Shakespeare set one of his best-known plays, Hamlet.
On the way back, you’ll visit an original and relaxed museum of modern art.
A visit to an original park followed by a dinner in an excellent Italian restaurant before returning to the city.

Just short distance from Copenhagen, this jewel of Nordic expressionism is absolutely a must see.
Peder Klint, architect, painter and engineer, charged with the task of designing a church in this areain the 1920s, was inspired by the Danish tradition with an obsessive attention to geometric shapes and clean lines.
During the construction period, the residential district began to be built on the basis of the geometry of the church, in order to respect the perspective and symmetry. So first the church was born, then the surrounding neighborhood.
The first impact is that of the main external facade, which made me exclaim in amazement. A few years later I visited the main church in Reykjavik, Hallgrímskirkja, which reminded me a lot of this church: in fact the two buildings are based on the same expressionistic architectural style.
Grundtvigs, however, is of its kind, especially in the interior, where the long and tall naves with no trace of ornament will leave you breathless: I literally loved the cleanliness of the forms, the feeling of infinity given by the perspective and the height of the columns, and the sense of peace and concentration.

    Welcome to the fairytale castle.
This is how I imagined the princesses' castles as a child: a huge and richly decorated palace surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens.
First a fortress and then a national museum, it offers to its lucky visitors elegant rooms with gilded ceilings, tapestries and paintings.
This is one of the most photographed places in Denmark. The two best places to immortalize the castle are: 1. Strolling along the shores of the lake in the town of Hillerød while reaching the Castle 2. From the gardens of the castle (personally the option I prefer)
Inside the castle you can visit about 70 rooms and I am sure they will not disappoint your expectations. Be sure to visit the following, which in my opinion are the most beautiful and significant (I kept exclaiming wow!):
    1. The Great Hall: it is impossible to describe the beauty of this room. The colored ceiling, the large chandelier, the decorated walls: so much magnificence in a single space. Simply wonderful. 2. The Rose: columns, wooden walls and decorated ceiling made me imagine kings and queens of other times moving between these spaces. 3. The Chapel: decorative stuccoes, gold, silver, platinum cover the walls, ceiling and columns. Do you find any difference with the church visited this morning?

A fairytale castle deserves fairytale gardens.
And speaking of gardens, I recommend visiting the Frederiksborg Castle gardens calmly to admire the baroque forms and the peace that reigns here.
Hedges that draw sinuous and elegant shapes, I think this is one of the most romantic gardens imaginable.
A true baroque garden to savor the atmosphere of past times when kings and queens strolled among avenues of rare flowers and well-kept plants.

After so much wandering around the castle and gardens, you need some energy!
And to top off the experience, there is no better place than Cafe Haveuset, which is located within the Frederiksborg Castle Gardens.
The small house that houses the bar / restaurant blends perfectly with the garden setting.
Try traditional Danish openfaced sandwiches followed by a slice of cake.

Kronborg Castle or better known as Hamlet's castle, since Shakespeare set the famous drama there, even though he never visited the castle (at least so the legend goes!) But you are lucky enough to be able to visit it and exclaim the famous dilemma between the corridors and the many rooms: "To be, or not to be, that is the question."
The magnificent walk to get to the castle is along the castle walls and passes some delightful Danish-style houses.
My best memory of this castle is related to the scenes of Hamlet played by real actors in the various spaces of the castle. At fixed times (which may vary from day to day and which are shown on the blackboard in the inner courtyard), a company of actors stages the most famous scenes of the Shakespearean drama, staging almost the entire work in an itinerant form.
The actors also interact with the audience in a very funny way. For example, Queen Gertrude commented my outfit saying it was very beautiful and wondering which tailor had sewn it for me. I replied that the tailor was Spanish, named Zara!
These representations take place only in the summer and if you visit the castle during this period do not miss them! There is no need to follow them from the beginning, each scene is complete and meaningful even if you have lost the previous ones, so even two or three may be enough.

Then enjoy a leisurely walk along the harbor of Helsingor with beautiful views of the castle and the city.
In fact, this place is part of the City Culture Project to connect the city with the castle.
Cultural events and concerts are often hosted here and it is a very pleasant place to spend some time watching the comings and goings of locals and travelers from all over the world.

A beautiful white building nestled in a green park dotted with statues, a Cafe overlooking the sea: even if you are not passionate about modern art, stop at the Luisiana Museum for a visit.
You will be amazed by the relaxed atmosphere here: often the locals come here to relax, sunbathe, have a picnic and, why not, to dive into the sea on the hottest days.

An explosion of colors, objects, shapes and geometries.
This is what I thought the first time I saw this park designed by architects BIG, Topotek1 and Superflex.
The park is located in a multi-ethnic neighborhood and celebrates its cultural diversity.
I felt this symbolism very strongly: the park is populated by people of all ages and ethnicities, from families to teenagers on skateboards as well as objects that recall different places in the world suggested by the inhabitants of the neighborhood when, during the design, the they were asked what they lacked most about their place of origin.
It is divided into three areas: Red Square, the Black Market and the Green Park.
In general you can feel a positive feeling of union and peaceful coexistence, where diversity is a value.
