    Highlights

    • Take your time to let the stories sink in, before you head to the next spot.
    • Try 'Poffertjes', a bunch of cute little Dutch pancakes.
    • Watch where you drive, you will find a lot of bicycles on your way.
Does your knowledge about WWII not go any further than the Ann-Frank story? Then this is the trip for you! You will drive to the opposite part of the country, to see the battlegrounds near the German Border with your own eyes. You will find out everything there is to find out on the Battle for Arnhem. You will not only see but also hear what it's like to be in a war.
During your trip you will get around by car and on foot. You will visit several monuments, museums and important places in the WWII history of the Netherlands. Between stops, you can take a breather in beautiful surroundings and enjoy local food and hospitality. And did you know that the bridge from the movie 'a bridge too far' still exists?

There was heavy fighting in the area between Arnhem and Wageningen during the Second World War. The much-discussed failed Operation Market Garden costs thousands of lives in September 1944. Every year this is still remembered in the region. This route takes you to the famous 'bridge too far', a war cemetery, museums and more interesting WW2 sights in the Arnhem/Nijmegen region.

What Happened After Operation Market Garden Failed?

Good morning! Have you had a good night's sleep? Great! Time to start with day to. But before we do, did you sprinkle ‘Hagelslag’ on your bread this morning? Its a typical Dutch way to eat breakfast. Get a slice of bread, spread it with butter and sprinkle the hagelslag (little pieces of chocolate) on it. It’s delicious, trust me. Ok back to the tour. Today you are going to discover what happened after the failure of Operation Market Garden. Today is a day of contrasts. The route will take you to different spots where you are reminded of the battles that were fought by the Dutch against the Germans. But even though the history is gruesome, the surroundings you are going to discover are beautiful and sometimes even mesmerizing.

    Peace at Last!

Of course, you know that WWII ended in the Netherlands in 1945. You will find a happy end to your journey (not that happy end, you filthy-minded reader) in Wageningen, where the Germans signed the capitulation. Yay!
