Nature at Its Best

It is a long drive to Groningen, so it is nice to make some stops before you get there. Here, for example, you will find Nature park Lelystad. You can park your car at the entrance and walk around. You can see a lot of animals, and there is even an otter area. Don't you love to see an otter every now and then? The best start of the day!

Depending on the weather you can make this a quick stop or a long stop. De Ulesprong is a place near the water where you can relax for a little while, and buy a drink or an ice cream which is always nice when you are road tripping.

A road trip in the Netherlands has to include a windmill. Here you go! De Niebertemolen is the perfect mill for your Instagram pictures. It was built in 1899 and is used to make flour out of corn.

This museum is settles in a monumental building. It holds a private collection of realistic and figurative art. Beware, the museum is only open on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). More information here.

There are a few restaurants to choose from in Termunterzijl. You can find fish and chips here, and you can try the famous Groningse eierbal (egg ball). Beware this restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The visitors centre is the perfect place to start the second part of your day. This is one part of the Netherlands that shares its nature with Germany. The Waddenzee stretches all the way from Den Helder to here. The Dollard area, as this part is called, is 100 square kilometres, you will find seals, a lot of different birds and a beautiful landscape. In the top of the building you have a 360 degrees view on the scenery where you can watch birds.

If you don't want to walk far, you can skip this stop. But if you are not afraid of a little work-out, you can head out for the seal watch wall. It's a great hike on flat terrain, so if you are fit, go for it!

Pick up your car.

The Beach pavilion Delfzijl looks shiny. That is because it is brand new! Park your car somewhere along the Handelskade, there should be plenty of room, and enjoy the fresh sea air! From here, you can walk into the centre to get some dinner.

After a day of road tripping and breathing in all that crips air into your lungs, you must be hungry. Lucky you because here you can have the best fresh-made pizza! A perfect meal to end your day. And since your hotel is within a walking distance, you can have a beer as well. Hurray! Beware the restaurant is closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.
