Napa is a long north-south valley which gets very busy during high season. We recommend starting far up-valley—in this case in Saint Helena—and working your way south to avoid as much traffic as possible. Napa is convivial. The point is to slow down, share a meal and a glass of wine, enjoy the company and views, and revel in your good fortune to experience the beauty of California's most iconic wine region. It's nice here. Enjoy the ride.

Napa and Saint Helena Road Trip
In 1976, a British wine merchant, Steven Spurrier, set up a blind tasting of American and French chardonnay, French Bordeaux, and California cabernet sauvignon. The French judges did their work "blind," not knowing which wines they were tasting. In each contest, it was the American wines—a Cabernet and a chardonnay from Napa— which came out on top, forever establishing Napa as a wine region to be reckoned with on the world stage.
You can still visit the winning wineries, Chateau Montelena and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and taste their wines all these years later—a testament to the longevity of the region. Since 1976, Napa has grown immeasurably, with new AVAs and countless wineries jockeying for a place in the historical record of the region. Though there is much to do in Napa, a day-long visit here is best done at a slower pace, pausing to enjoy the wines and the culinary delights and driving along its less-traveled corridors.

Sausalito Equator
Since traffic on Napa's main thoroughfare, Route 29, can get extremely busy, make a brief stop in Sausalito before driving straight to Saint Helena. Locals and bike enthusiasts adore Sausalito Equator, one part coffee roastery and restaurant, one part community hub. Their honey butter waffle is one of the best waffles, full stop. You'd never notice it's gluten-free unless someone clued you in. Equator is known for their espresso, so try the macchiato with your choice of milk.

Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park
A bit of Napa history starts off your day. Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park has a working waterwheel and granary where local farmers once came to have their grains ground into flour. Historic tours and milling demonstrations with staff dressed in period-appropriate apparel are available on the weekends. Numerous hikes past the creeks, which feed the mill, start right from the mill.

Old Faithful Geyser of California
Napa's hot springs are responsible for the region's repute as a spa destination, and the town of Calistoga takes this heritage seriously. It hosts Old Faithful Geyser, so named for its eruptions every 15 to 30 minutes, dependably. The grounds here include a small museum which explains geysers, historic hot mineral therapy pools, and lava rocks.

Evangeline
The Creole-inflected bistro fare at a petite restaurant in downtown Calistoga has something for everyone. They are perhaps best known for their fried chicken sandwiches, which at lunch are layered on a brioche bun with coleslaw. Gumbo yaya and shrimp étouffée are right at home alongside a burger and fried pickles. You decide.

Château Montelena
Château Montelena earned a #1 spot in the 1976 Judgment of Paris for its 1973 chardonnay, but you won't be able to try it without making a reservation, as tastings are by appointment only. The stone château is worth a look, even if you don't wish to try the house's wares.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars
Kindly note that there is a Stag's Leap Winery not far from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and while both are in the Stag's Leap District and make Napa wines, only Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was at the Judgment of Paris, earning first place for its 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon. Reservations are required for all tasting experiences. Once seated, marvel at the view over Napa's hills or play a game of pétanque in-between sips.

Caffe della Valle
On your way back down-valley, be sure to stop in Saint Helena to stroll the quaint downtown and its many shops. Parking on the main thoroughfare is a challenge, but it is easy to find a space one block east. Before continuing your wine-tasting adventures, refresh your palate with a Green Goddess Juice from Caffe Della Valle. Enjoy it on the sunny patio, where the people-watching is as catty or friendly as your mood dictates.

The Grove at Copia
For dinner, make your way to downtown Napa, where the Grove at Copia is your final destination. The restaurant attached to the down-valley branch of the Culinary Institute of America, the Grove is the work of executive chef Sayat Ozyilmaz, whose Mediterranean flavors are a modern example of California Cuisine. Ask for a seat outside under the twinkling lights and with views of Copia's expansive demonstration gardens. Moroccan duck carnitas with bergamot dashi, and scallop ceviche with strawberry, hibiscus-lime emulsion, and aji amarillo are just two examples of Ozyilmaz's creativity and culinary mastery of multiple culinary influences. (Just please don't call it fusion.)
