A day in the Middle Ages between monastery, fairy tale forest and castle ruins

Park your car now at the public parking lot of Maulbronn Monastery, then set out on foot to explore the monastery grounds.

Maulbronn Monastery has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The monastery complex is very well preserved and today houses, among other things, the Maulbronn town hall, a high school with boarding school and several restaurants. Take enough time to explore the complex on foot at your leisure. By the way, it is especially worth mentioning that the portals of the monastery church are the oldest datable doors in Germany. By the way, scenes of the movie "The Name of the Rose" were also filmed here in the complex.

When you are ready for lunch, you can choose between several restaurants in the monastery complex. When the weather is nice, we recommend the Bruder Jacob beer garden. You should definitely order the Maultaschen, which according to legend were invented here in the monastery. When the monks received meat as a gift during Lent and didn't want it to go to waste, they chopped it up and hid it in dumplings so that the Lord God wouldn't see them eating meat. That's where the name "Herrgottsbscheißerle" comes from.

After lunch, the tour continues to Kraichgau. In the fairy tale forest you can follow in the footsteps of the Brothers Grimm, race around on a 250-meter long off-road go-kart track and practice obstacle billiards. This is just as interesting for children as it is for adults.

From the fairytale forest, you continue to the medieval Hornberg Castle. If you stay at the integrated hotel, you can park your car right at the top of the castle. Hornberg Castle is a real knight's castle, where Götz von Berlichingen lived for 45 years. Götz von Berlichingen is known, among other things, through the eponymous play by Goethe, where he is quoted with the famous saying "He can lick my ass".

After exploring the knight's castle, we recommend dinner in the castle's own restaurant. Especially worth mentioning for wine connoisseurs: the second oldest still existing winery in the world is operated here, so a look at the wine list is worthwhile.
