This 2-day road trip takes you out into central Croatia, the least visited part of the country, to Zagreb, and then along the stunning Dalmatian coastline back to Istria. This trip is for people who have either already been to many of the ‘must-see’ places in the country or who, like me, love to find those ‘hidden gems’; the weird, quirky, and unusual attractions and places. And there are plenty of these on this trip.
As a starting point, Zagreb has the strangest collection of museums that I’ve ever seen in one city, and I’ve chosen two of my particular favorites – an interactive chocolate museum and the Museum of Hangovers.
Outside of the city, the Croatian landscape has dozens of castles and fortresses, many of which see very few visitors. On this trip, you’ll get to wander around the ruins of one Medieval castle and have lunch in the fabulous courtyard of another.
There’s also a ‘secret’ World War II tunnel to be explored in Rijeka, as well as an old German warship that sits in the shallow waters of Zavratnica Bay. And to make sure you return to Pula with positive energy, you can walk around the Nebeski celestial labyrinths to restore your inner balance.

Castles, Tunnels and Chocolate
Today begins with a visit to the ruined castle of Dvigrad, a ‘hidden gem’ in Istria’s landscape. From here, you will drive Northeast to Rijeka where you can explore a former World War II tunnel, carved out of the rock beneath the old town. Lunch is in the courtyard of a wonderfully restored Medieval castle, from where you will drive to Zagreb, Croatia’s most under-rated city. Here you will enjoy an interactive chocolate tasting experience and a visit to the Museum of Hangovers – after tasting some craft beers in a brew pub.

Burek, Shipwrecks and Labyrinths
Today begins with a picturesque drive West to the small town of Tounj to check out its unusual old bridge. From here, you will drive down to the coast for a delicious seafood lunch before heading further South for a unique opportunity to swim around a shipwreck. After this, there’s another unique experience of walking ‘celestial labyrinths’ before heading back North for supper on Rijeka’s harbor and then back to Pula.
