Exploring Giverny, the House and Gardens of Monet

Start your day with the Museum of Impressionism in Giverny. There are a few paintings by Monet but most of the museum shows interesting temporary exhibits about Impressionism by painter or by theme. You can also walk around the beautiful garden.

Walk around the small town of Giverny and go until the church. In the cemetery next to the church, you will find the grave of Monet and his family.

This is the old hotel Baudy where Monet used to come to talk during long hours with his friend Clemenceau in the park. A lot of artists also came here and stayed in the hotel and could work in the workshops on the second floor. Many French and American painters as well came here.
You can have lunch in the restaurant inside or on the terrace if the weather is nice and you can enjoy a walk in the park as well.

Claude Monet came to live here in Giverny with his family in 1883 so he could practice his two passions for painting and gardening. The house has been restored like it was when Monet lived here. So you will find the same colors on the walls that Monet chose like yellow in the living room and the kitchen covered in azulejos which are blue ceramic tiles, etc. You will not see any original painting of the master here, only reproductions. But the visit is to feel the atmosphere in which Monet lived. You can enjoy his collections of Japanese prints. In his workshop, it is now the giftshop.

After visiting the house, spend some time in the gardens as they are the masterpiece of Monet, in real life and in his paintings. Try to visit when the water lilies are blooming and you will see the setting of the famous series of paintings called Nympheas that Monet never got tired of painting. You can also admire the Japanese garden with the Japanese bridge, also subject of so many paintings. There is an underground passage to go to the water pond on the other side of the road.

This was a place where the Impressionist painters would meet. Renoir painted here its famous painting "the lunch of the canoeists". It is a museum and a restaurant where you will have dinner later on. It shows especially the world of the Impressionists by the river Seine.

Walk around this island on the river Seine, it was a popular spot for the Impressionist painters. There is a nice park.

There is also this nice parc of the Impressionists. It is a very nice place to walk around, and the style of the garden is definitely impressionist style. And a lot of the impressionist painters would come in this area to paint.

Go back to the Maison Fournaise for a delicious dinner in this gastronomic restaurant with delicious French traditional food.
