Neuschwanstein Castle - The Dream of Sissi’s Cousin King Ludwig Ii of Bavaria

Even though Sissi was only connected to Neuschwanstein through her cousin King Ludwig II, a visit to this castle is a destination on our tour in Sissi's footsteps through Bavaria. For King Ludwig II, it was his fateful castle. For the enormous costs of his building project, which he paid out of his private fortune, dragged him into a debt trap. This ultimately led to the Bavarian government having him incapacitated in 1886. Only a few days later, Ludwig II drowned in Lake Starnberg.

    Neuschwanstein Castle

Even though Sissi never lived in Neuschwanstein Castle, she was closely associated with its builder, King Ludwig II of Bavaria, from childhood. The latter himself only lived in his fairytale castle for a total of 172 days.

Parking near Neuschwanstein Castle is not possible. Parking spaces P1 to P4 are available in the center of Hohenschwangau. In the navigation in the car enter Alpseestraße.
This is how you get to Neuschwanstein Castle:
On foot: The castle is 1.5 kilometers uphill from the parking lot. Duration of the walk about 40 minutes.
By horse-drawn carriage: Departure from Hotel Müller (Alpseestraße) in Hohenschwangau. The carriages do not go all the way to the castle. From the castle stop it is about 450 meters uphill or a 5-10 minute walk to the castle entrance. Tickets are available directly from the coachman.
By shuttle bus: These buses leave from P4 (Alpsee). You have to expect waiting times in high season. You buy tickets on the bus. The buses run all year round and shuttle without a fixed schedule. The last bus leaves at 6:45 pm in summer and 4:45 pm in winter (The bus does not run when the roads are covered with snow or ice). These buses cannot go all the way to the castle, but will drop you off near the Marienbrücke (the bridge is temporarily closed for maintenance until fall 2022).
