Puglia Scent of Food and Sea

Leave your luggage and start with a walking tour in the southern part of BARI: you can find the beaches characterized by high rocky coasts alternating with small beaches found in the inlets. Among the most characteristic localities we point out Polignano a Mare, a wonderful town with houses perched on the rock overlooking the sea. Here the coast is high and rocky, much appreciated by those who love diving into a deep sea and are looking for uncrowded beaches, it is the ideal place for those who love to hike in the sea caves. The sea here is exceptional, Polignano has been awarded the Blue Flag. In Polignano there is also a small bay with pebbles, Torre Incina, ideal for entertaining children. Another place with a wonderful sea is Monopoli, here you can find both low and sandy beaches and rocky coasts.

A tour in the old city needs to start from the castle. Bari is a city where many different kind of personality coexisted, it was a strategic area during Federico II, it was dominated by arabs (30years),it is the city of s. Nicola, Isabella d’Aragona, princess of Naples and widow of the Duke Gian Galeazzo Sforza of Milan, enlarged the castle, which she made her residence, 1499–1524. After the death of Queen Bona Sforza, of Poland, Bari came to be included in the Kingdom of Naples and its history contracted to a local one, as malaria became endemic in the region. Bari was awakened from its provincial somnolence by Napoleon's brother-in-law Joachim Murat. As Napoleonic King of Naples, Murat ordered the building in 1808 of a new section of the city, laid out on a rationalist grid plan, which bears his name today as the Murattiano. Under this stimulus, Bari developed into the most important port city of the region. The legacy of Mussolini can be seen in the imposing architecture along the seafront.the old town is a mixture of dominations and adaptability of people.

    Teatro Margherita

We will meet our ncc driver near Margherita Yheatre for a special coffee in Polignano... The history of the Margherita Theater is troubled and fascinating.
In 1893 the Eden Margherita was built, a floating complex on the sea. In 1910 a wooden theater was built, the Margherita Variety, also on the sea, a decision taken as a ploy, to circumvent the pact signed between the Municipality and the Petruzzelli family according to which the administration undertook not to build other theaters on the ground municipal. It was the target of violent criticism both from the owners of the Petruzzelli Theater, who saw it as a competitor, and from those who believed it obstructed the view of the sea from Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
A year after its inauguration, it was completely destroyed by a fire.
But in 1914 it was rebuilt with a liberty style structure, this time in masonry with foundations in the sea, and inaugurated with the name of Kursaal Margherita, in honor of the wife of King Umberto I of Savoy. For the opening night, a program containing the best numbers of the cafè chantant is staged. It is the first time for Bari. The Kursaal Margherita is the first building built in the city in reinforced concrete, and is still the only one in Europe today due to the particular construction on stilts. Being entirely surrounded by water, until the waterfront is complete, the theater is connected to the mainland by a pier.
In May 1916 it definitively changed its name, becoming Teatro Margherita.

A point full of history, the best place to obserbe the world dive red bull competition. Lama Monachile is probably one of the most famous and symbolic scenarios of Polignano a Mare, a bay of clear water set between high cliffs of rock. The high rock on which Polignano stands and almost climbs is in fact 'interrupted' only for a few meters to accommodate this delightful and picturesque cove that gently slopes towards the waters of the Adriatic. It is a free beach where the white of the pebbles meets the waters of the sea, the latter of a color that varies from green to turquoise. Also known as Cala Porto, it has often been awarded the Legambiente Blue Flag recognition, and is also an ideal observation point to admire the sea caves and houses of the village perched on the rock walls. Over time, Lama Monachile has equipped itself with services and infrastructures designed for tourists, such as bars and restaurants within a radius of about 100 meters. The Lama Monachile (or Cala Ponte) was built in the Bourbon age and stands on the ancient Via Traiana and is the most evocative panorama of the town. In the 15th century it was a commercial port during the Venetian domination.

the Chiesa Matrice, former Cathedral of Polignano and consecrated to Santa Maria Assunta in 1295, stands on the same area formerly occupied by a pagan temple. The entrance to the building, which can be reached by crossing the iron fence and the churchyard, is inserted in a facade that combines the Gothic with the Baroque. The bell tower stands out, more than 23 meters high, it is made up of three orders, added at different times. The lower part is characterized by two narrow windows that give light to the Buonospirito Chapel, or the Presepe, where a nativity scene is kept, today a National Monument, a work by Stefano da Putignano dating back to 1503). The interior is divided into three naves by arches resting on six columns. A notable work of art is the eighteenth-century organ of the Neapolitan school, located at the top of the entrance. But the gaze of the faithful and the visitor is immediately captured by the majesty of the high altar (on the back is a painting of the '600).
