Exploring One of Alaska's Most Interesting Towns
Finally, a full day in McCarthy. Here you'll find superlative peaks that have never been climbed, rivers that have yet to see a pack rafter, and trees that have only witnessed moose, bears, and porcupines. You'll also find a town of warm, albeit quirky locals and some surprisingly stellar eateries, especially considering the year-round population could fit in a shuttle bus.

Kennecott Visitor Center
This morning, pop over to Kennecott. Between 1911 and 1938, Kennecott was a vitally important mining outpost. But one day, the mines ran dry, and the town shut down. You can get a rundown on the history of this visitor center housed in an old school. Park Rangers often lead free activities (check the visitor board for more details) from here, including lecturers and guided walks.

Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark
When the iconic red buildings of Kennecott Mines haven't been used since the late 1930s, the National Park Service has worked hard to maintain them. You can do tours of the mill building, bunkhouses, train depot, and more. There's a lodge and restaurant on-site, so grab a bite before heading back to McCarthy.

Meatza Wagon
When you have a craving that only barbecued meats can tame, there's Meatza Wagon. This food truck in Kennicott slings meatball subs, pulled pork sandwiches, tacos, and more. It makes for a great lunch spot.

Root Glacier Trail
Root Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in the area—there's an easy eight-mile round trip trail on the edge of Kennecott to the sparkling expanse of ice.

The New Golden Saloon
At this point, there are only two restaurants in town that you've yet to try. We'd recommend noshing at The Golden Saloon tonight. Not only is it a great place for people-watching (especially from the patio), but the entrees range from cheeseburgers to gourmet (if they have the Copper River salon with spruce tip pesto, do yourself a favor and get it), so they should have something that tickles your fancy. Also, save room for the homemade pie. Hours vary, but they're always open for dinner.

Ma Johnson’s Historical Hotel
No reason to move hotels tonight, Ma Johnson's has everything you need and nothing you don't. Spend the evening in the common area swapping Alaska tall tales with the other guests.
